More than 2000 years ago, several routes for trade opened and connected civilizations in Asia, Europe and Africa. As an important bond for promoting the prosperity and development of the countries along the route, the Silk Road became synonymous of peace, cultural exchange, and cooperation. Today, China is pursuing decidedly economic and power-political interests with its „New Silk Road“ and sees itself as a world power according to its historical self-image as the Middle Kingdom.

Until now, there has been little to no European response to China’s more assertive policy. On the contrary, in the face of Brexit, right-wing populism and refugee crisis(es), the borders have even been drawn tighter in recent years and the idea of Europe has been called into question. With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the common European peace project is attacked in its fundamental values. And with the new US foreign policy, which disregards the value of the transatlantic alliance, Europe has to develop the political will and capabilities to defend its own values, interests and security

The Callias Foundation defends and champions the notion of a Europe that is resilient, united by threads that are as delicate as they are strong. Of a Europe that draws its strength from its diversity, sense of solidarity, and fundamental humanist values.

Partizipatives Tool

Hintergrund

The original inspiration for the European Silk Road App is a major infrastructure project proposed by the wiiw in Vienna. In these times of war and climate crisis, the European Silk Road (european-silk-road.eu) champions a major vision for a modern high-speed rail network and a green infrastructure project connecting the industrial centers on the western side of the continent to the highly populated regions in the east. This aims to strengthen the European Project in the face of overarching power projections.
